God’s Guest: Visit 1

Great But…Something Is Missing

Your church has a significant online presence. I could see and read about your leaders and staff. It provided a lot of information regarding the type of service, what to wear and how long it would last. I also saw ways to get involved and be active in church life. There were no surprises.

On arrival, I had my own parking spot, “first-time guest.” Yes, you considered me a guest, not a visitor. I was someone whom you were anticipating and waiting to see. My particular parking spot was in front of the entrance so your greeters could see as I walked in. It was raining outside, and as I got out of my car, attendants ran towards me with umbrellas.

Friendly faces and warm welcomes met me as I prepared to enter the building. Everyone was dressed comfortably and casually, and I felt appropriate. There was also coffee for me to grab a cup and take in the sanctuary. Children under twelve were not permitted in the sanctuary. As long as my children are safe and learning, then I’m ok. But I do feel that children should be part of the main worship services on a regular basis.

I received an information card about the sermon series and church happenings as I entered the sanctuary. I took my seat in a comfortable row of chairs. Churchgoers approached me and asked me my name. I sat back and listened to churchgoers around me say lovely things about what’s happening in the church. Two large screens had a countdown to when the service would begin, and it started right on time. Guest could text in to let someone know they were there.

I love the lighting and atmosphere of the church. There was an amazing worship team with a live band. I didn’t know the words to the songs, but lyrics on the screen helped me follow along. I soon found myself in a space where I could worship our Lord. After worship, the announcements were organized and displayed on the screens. I texted the number on the screen alerting that I was a first-time guest but received no follow-up. It also wasn’t clear how or when I could support the church financially.
The pastor came before the audience for the first time during the preaching moment. The preaching was Biblical and went along with the card that was handed to me at the entrance. The sermon was part of a series, and it was engaging enough that I desired to go back. The pastor talked about Jesus wanting me. The pastor did an excellent job of presenting the text, a topic, and multiple illustrations in about thirty minutes.

To sum it up, your church is doing great things, reaching people outside the walls. It is obvious that resources are being spent to reach the local community and foreign mission. But I think something is missing. You told me about our wonderful Redeemer and His great works, but you never told me how I could specifically get to know Him. If I was in need of salvation you did not offer it to me. This would definitely be a missed opportunity for a nonbeliever. I left walking away with the love of your people but no love of the one who could save me.

  1. Katrina Walker I just told your mother that I couldn’t wait for you to start blogging again. Katrina I love the part when you said you told me about our Redeemer, but you never told me how I could get to know him Powerful. I began to think to myself, that person went out the way they came in thinking do I get to know this God.

  2. Most churches can give you the word but they can’t tell you how to use the word.if a person is brokenthey want to know how to put the pieces back to Heather.
